These lovely books offer travelers great reading and viewing. An introduction covers reasons to visit each locale, top attractions, the best places to go, as selected by series editors (including parks, museums, and festivals), and much more, all in a welcoming and exciting tone. An expansive history lesson is supplied via a time line, short keynotes, and longer essays about cultures, important advancements, and events. This lengthy overview offers more detail than many other guides and should please readers seeking context in their vacation-planning. Incorporated into these history lessons are listings of modern-day activities and experiences connected to the culture, again offering a rich connection to the locale for travelers who want more than a topline summary. (Examples include art, dance, sports, food, and wine.) Subsequent chapters address places to visit in similar detail. These chapters nicely suggest a sense of getting lost in the city and local life while also checking off key tourist attractions. VERDICT Full of color photos and offering rich insight and history, these guides hit a sweet spot. They are not as on-the-ground practical as the Fodor's, Frommer's, Lonely Planet, or Rick Steves publications, but they provide far more insight and context, and patrons will enjoy reading them. Libraries that can afford multiple books on popular destinations should add them to the collection.
