When his new school hallways start to feel like a labyrinth, how will Gus the minotaur and his human pal Nick stay calm and find their way to the correct classroom? Find out in this action-packed early reader from comics artist Jeffrey Ebbeler.
It’s Nick’s first day at a new school! As he walks in, he meets an easily excitable and impatient minotaur named Gus. It’s Gus’ first day, too—so he grabs Nick’s hand and charges straight into the building. There’s so much to see and do! They dance along with band practice, bounce around the school gym, end up in the boiler room, and. . . okay. They’re lost.
They may not know where to go, but they know what to do: wait a minute, calm down, and retrace their steps so they can find their classroom. Young comics readers are sure to resonate with comics illustrator Jeffrey Ebbeler’s hilarious, slapstick take on a common coming-of-age experience—and parents will love the subtle lessons of patience and critical thinking.

K-Gr 2-It's the start of the school year and Nick is worried about finding his classroom at Icarus Elementary. Gus the minotaur is also new, and he has a plan. Taking Nick by the hand, Gus charges full speed into the school. They are going so fast they actually miss the welcome sign for them, and Gus ends up with the torn banner stuck to his shirt without even noticing. The daring duo zoom through the science, music, PE, and art classes; the cafeteria; and finally the basement. When they climb the stairs, they find themselves in a different school populated by high schoolers and Nick realizes that they have to retrace their steps. Armed with various items picked up on the way, they charge back in reverse. End paper maps cleverly show their routes. In this graphic novel that is low on dialogue but high on action, the art takes center stage. Full-color panels are easy to follow and full of humorous details that will invite multiple readings. Nick presents as Caucasian, while the school's population is more diverse. Gus is the only mythological creature. Ebbeler's I'm Ogre It and Kraken Me Up also team up a kid with a mythological creature. VERDICT A lighthearted read for any child nervous about the start of school.-Elisabeth LeBris

Grades K-2 *Starred Review* When a boy is nervous about finding his classroom on the first day at a new school, the other newcomer--a Minotaur--invites him along, shouting "Charge!" Hand in hoof, they barrel past their class, wreaking havoc in the science lab, destroying musical equipment in the band room, getting pummeled by dodgeballs in the gym, and posing quickly for an art class before snatching donuts as they sprint through the cafeteria, when they finally realize they are lost. So they charge back the way they came, righting a few wrongs along the way. This book is unbelievably smart: in a story told with very few words, the pace and emotion remain strong, and it's hard not to drop a jaw as the duo gives a donut to the custodian, uses a drum from the music class to deflect dodgeballs back at bullies, and gifts a rose from the still life to a worthy cafeteria lady. Every single panel and spread pays off beautifully in this action-packed and hilariously rendered graphic novel. This is a fantastic addition to the I Like to Read Comics line from Holiday House, and Ebbeler deserves a standing ovation for all the hidden gems in this Icarus Elementary adventure.
