Orphaned Josh recalls his life and adventures growing up with his supportive and loving extended family in Canada. While Mackie Quave's voice seems to have the potential to shape itself into many voices, his reading is inconsistent in sustaining individual characters. All adult voices, including the women's, are deep and resonant. When he does differentiate people, he seems unable to hold himself in most roles. He gives young Josh a high, whispered voice, which fits the adolescent role, only to read the part at breakneck speed or at a snail's pace. He also performs Josh's emotional responses with far too much intensity. Technical problems, such as continual background noises, make this tape for determined Oke fans only. P.A.J.
