TIME For Kids Heroes of Black History presents the stories of four great American heroes every child should know about in one volume: Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama. Featuring an introduction by journalist and civil rights activist Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Heroes of Black History shines a light on the long fight for social justice in the United States as it highlights the accomplishments and personal histories of these four pivotal Americans.
Young readers learn about the life of Harriet Tubman-born a slave around 1820, she escaped to the North, but returned to the South nineteen times as a conductor on the Underground Railroad to lead 300 slaves to freedom. An incredibly gifted athlete, Jackie Robinson endured taunts, slurs, and death threats when he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1947. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on an Alabama bus in 1955 and paved the way for a Supreme Court decision that declared segregation on Alabama's public buses was unconstitutional. On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama took the oath of office as our country's first African American president.
Illustrated with a dynamic mix of photographs and illustrations, the biographies of these Americans delve deeper than their accomplishments to reveal details on their childhoods, early experiences, schooling, family life, and more. Sidebars about related topics-Underground Railroad routes, sports firsts, the Harlem Renaissance, and more-give context and additional insights for young readers. Heroes of Black History also gives readers a timeline overview of three centuries of African American history, beginning with the slave trade, touching upon the formation of the NAACP, the civil rights movement, the March on Washington, and other pivotal events, up through the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement. Brief profiles of more than twenty additional heroes of black history, a glossary of key terms, and a detailed index are also included in this comprehensive book.

Gr 3-6-This biographical collection of black heroes provides information on well-known subjects including Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama. The simple syntax and straightforward language makes this accessible to middle grade readers. Captioned photographs provide additional firsthand information to offer readers a comprehensive perspective on these figures. Full-color graphics and sidebars help divide large segments of text. The introductory resource includes a time line of U.S. history from the beginnings of chattel slavery to the modern Black Lives Matter movement. The scope is vast and sometimes the cohesiveness suffers when some text features fail to match the tone or content of the main subject, such as a sidebar on the origins of baseball in Jackie Robinson's profile. Additional people are referenced in the appendices, but many included are no longer living and more contemporary counterparts are not featured. VERDICT The accessibility of this volume and its photojournalistic style will aid both browsers and report writers alike.-Jamie Jensen, Wayne Cox Elementary School, Roanoke, TX

Biographies of Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and former President Barack Obama in one volume. The introduction provides a broad overview of black U.S. history starting with the trans-Atlantic slave trade in the 1600s and ending in 2013 with the genesis of the Black Lives Matter movement. The biographies are presented chronologically beginning with Harriet Tubman, "A Woman of Courage." While her famous code name, "Moses," is, oddly, never mentioned, the rest of her life is examined, beginning with her childhood (as all the biographies do). In addition to her heroic role on the Underground Railroad, her lesser-known exploits as a scout, nurse, and spy during the Civil War are also chronicled. Next is athlete Jackie Robinson, "Strong Inside and Out." Emphasis is placed on Robinson's courage and rightly so, though the idea that he had "guts enough" not to fight back is problematic. Third is "Civil Rights Icon" Rosa Parks. Previous challenges to segregation laws (like Claudette Colvin's) that paved the way for Parks go unmentioned, but Parks' lifelong commitment to civil rights is evident. Last is Barack Obama, "First African-American President." Obama's childhood as a minority in Hawaii and Indonesia is presented as foundational to his ability to connect with a variety of people, eventually helping him to become president. Photos and historical snippets help add context. Despite the few inaccuracies (ex. ."..the Black Panthers, a party that had advocated violently...," etc.), a solid volume on these four great black trailblazers. The thumbnail biographies of other notable figures at the end begs the question, isn't it time for lesser-known heroes to have their moment to shine? (timelines, glossary, index) (Collective biography. 9-14)
