Grades K-2 Each entry in the Crayola Colorful Biomes series (6 titles) briefly discusses the biome, offers bits of information about some of the diverse animals and plants shown, and points out colors in the accompanying photographs. Although the large-print text is written to be accessible to young readers, Bullard doesn't shy away from the occasional challenging word such as algae, camouflaged, deciduous, or predator when it's the best choice available and a useful term for junior naturalists to know. Each book includes a simplified world map that highlights regions where the particular biome can be found. The many photos are well-chosen and beautifully reproduced. Desert Colors includes information on how animals' coloring can often conceal them within their surroundings but notes that certain prominent markings will actually warn off predators. While the link between biomes and colors seems tenuous, these appealing books may be useful in school settings as simply written introductions to biomes and/or colors.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)

K-Gr 3-Vivid nature photography is the star of this introduction to the six most common biomes. Each title features a map showing the biome's locations in the world, a description of the climate and habitat, and chapters on a selection of the biome's interesting and colorful plants, big animals, and small animals. While the series is not comprehensive enough to be a sole resource, the Crayola tie-in has the potential to intrigue reluctant readers. It also gives educators an opportunity to incorporate art themes into science classes. A glossary, a "To Learn More" section, and an index are included. VERDICT An appealing primer. Recommended for large collections and elementary environmental science lessons.
