Teens are likely familiar with headlines about mass shootings and other hate crimes flashing across their smartphones. This may cause them to search for answers about what drives people to commit such brutal acts of violence. With sensitive, explanatory text, this title explores some of the biological and psychological factors that can drive hate crimes and other aggressive actions. These causes can include intimacy, bias, genetics, and some psychological conditions that can be successfully treated if properly understood.

High School-Each title in this series collects articles that relate to a common topic, whether it is COVID-19, violence, sports, or monsters. Separate sections within the book group the articles by theme. For instance, articles on sports might address sports technology, sports culture, or the psychology of sports. Articles run anywhere from two to twelve pages in length and there are no illustrations. A glossary and list of sources for further information round out each collection. One of the strengths of this series is the variety of viewpoints presented; each article has author information listed so that readers can see the background and expertise of the writer(s) and their particular perspective on the issue. That feature would make the articles particularly useful for classroom debate and discussion. VERDICT A useful collection for research and exploring different aspects of the various topics.

Grades 9-12 This compilation of scholarly articles from Scientific American considers multiple facets of human violence, divided into five areas: ""The Biology and Psychology of Violence,"" ""Violent Societies,"" ""Race and Gender Violence,"" ""Police Violence,"" and ""How and How Not to Reduce Violence."" The editors provide brief introductions to each section, and then 26 essays, ranging from 4 pages to 10 plus, are reprinted as they first appeared. All have been authored by experts in various fields and are intended for general adult audiences, but they should be accessible to most high-school students. One drawback is that complete citations, including publishing dates, are provided only as back matter. Still, this authoritative resource will be welcomed by collections supporting student researchers. Part of the Scientific American Explores Big Ideas series (4 titles).
