      Brenda Scott Wlazlo captures a pivotal time in Fallon Monroe's life. As she turns 40, she hits early menopause, undergoes a shift in her friend group, and aspires to shift from suburban housewife to boutique chocolatier. Suddenly, her best friend, Beatrice, along with other housewives she knows, stop inviting Fallon and her 7-year-old daughter to social gatherings, and Fallon is clueless as to why. Wlazlo captures the rather vapid and often frazzled voice of Fallon as she methodically makes lists in her head and considers her social interactions. But the generic voices Wlazlo assigns to the infrequent men and children in the story fail to provide them with recognizable vocal personalities. S.S. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

      Cathryn's charming debut asks, "What's a person to do if their best friend breaks up with them?" Fallon Monroe is an almost 40-year-old mom who is starting a chocolate business, adores self-help books, and now is trying to figure out why her bestie of seven years has ghosted her and why the rest of her mom friends are turning against her. As she tries to repair the relationships, she realizes that people come into one's life for "a reason, a season, or a lifetime." As Fallon deals with mom-drama and addresses long-standing (and largely ignored) challenges from her past, she has to figure out who she is and what her priorities are. Brenda Scott Wlazlo's narration is a perfect tonal match for the novel. Initially, the pace may seem slow, but it soon becomes apparent that it is in tune with the story's message, to slow down and reflect. Cathryn's narrative about an oft-experienced but little-discussed situation will surely strike a chord. VERDICT Cathryn's thought-provoking debut may be billed as a "mom-com," but one need not be a mom to appreciate it. A sure bet for fans of Jennifer Weiner.--Donna Bachowski
