      While driving cattle on Aletha 3, a planet whose climate and terrain is similar to the American Southwest, sixteen-year-old Travis comes across an animal torn to pieces and is attacked by an alien creature. Meanwhile, Lebrie and his daughter Riane arrive to meet with foreman Allan Tempke. Lebrie shows an interest in the alien creature, and Tempke hires Travis to be a guide to search for it. After coming across the creature and barely surviving, Lebrie discovers via DNA testing that it is an extinct dinosaur species that has been let loose on Aletha 3. Obtaining an injunction, he shuts down the terraforming project. With tensions growing between the pioneers and Lebrie, and a herder killed by the creature, an abandoned freighter is discovered. Reaching the freighter, Lebrie and Travis discover that the creature has siblings, hatched from eggs on the freighter and let loose. With a fast-paced narrative, a likeable, youthful protagonist, exploration of environmental issues, and the ethics of bioengineering extinct species, sf readers will enjoy this offbeat tale.
