Uncomplicating Cars for All of Us
March 15, 2024
Since 2017, Milchtein has been online, demystifying car ownership and maintenance for women and queer folks, creating an environment that is educational, inclusive, and empowering. Her first book reflects that ethos, and in 14 common-sense chapters, she breaks down the necessities, from budgeting for and selecting a car to, when the time is right, selling that car. Instead of a DIY manual (though there is a little DIY here, like how to check your oil and tire pressure), she offers advice on how to avoid scams when buying a car, how much car insurance you need, how to build a relationship with a mechanic, and what that sound your brakes are making means and what you should do about it. Rather than being prescriptive, she offers readers options so they can make educated decisions and backs her advice up with anecdotes and statistics. Affably written, Mechanic Shop Femme's Guide to Car Ownership should find a large audience in public libraries, especially among those traditionally left out of the car-buying and maintenance process.
