The Judgment-Free Guide to Creating the Joyful, Less Stressed, Purposeful (and, Yes, Rich) Life You Deserve
Starred review from July 1, 2019
Despite controlling more money than ever before, women have a unique view of money--psychologically, emotionally, and pragmatically--that differs greatly from the average male viewpoint. Believing that money complicates relationships, women tend to be more risk-averse than men, often relinquishing financial decisions to their partners rather than dealing with it themselves. In focusing on the female perspective of money management, Chatzky (Money Rules) discusses everyday financial decisions including IRAs, 401(k)s, credit cards, loans, buying or renting a home, mortgages and reverse mortgages, investing, helping aging parents, teaching children good financial habits, giving to charity, and life-stage and estate planning. Presenting up-to-date information from the female perspective and addressing concerns specific to women with excellent practical suggestions and explanations, the author's well-paced reading enhances this title. Verdict Chatzky's refreshing take on women's approach to money is both practical and fascinating. Will appeal to a wide range of listeners.--Laurie Selwyn, formerly with Grayson Cty. Today Show financial expert Chatzky (AgeProof, 2017) offers this females-and-money tome bolstered by research into the psychological underpinnings behind money relationships as well as her own series of happy-hour discussions and one-on-one conversations with Philadelphia women of varied ages and circumstances. Her findings make her recommendations all that much more real and, occasionally, even poignant in the stories she relates. Exercises will help readers confront money demons and encourage dialogues about unspoken fears, angers, and concerns. A few examples: fill in the blank to the money secret I've been keeping is ___. Or What messages did your mother/father pass down to you as a child? Much of the other content is standard, such as negotiating for salaries/promotions, understanding investments?and the obstacles?launching a business, etc. At the end, it is all about being financially independent, expressing the difference between wants and needs, telling yourself no and learning how to wait, ?and knowing that it's not the end of the world to fail. Sensible and sensitive.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)

Chatzky, an award-winning financial journalist and founder of hermoney.com, examines how women relate to their finances, asserting that it's not simply about accumulation or status but also security. This book begins with an introspective exploration of the factors that shape a woman's relationship to money. The second part dives into managing one's funds through earning and investing. Finally, Chatzky delves into how to spend money for the lives women want, while also caring for children and aging parents. The author further offers insight into entrepreneurship and managing rental properties and includes helpful exercises and steps for consideration. Thoughtfully arranged, this volume is designed to follow women's stories from childhood through retirement. Chatzky's profiles of successful business owners and investors supply solid facts and figures that provide perspective into women's past and future relationships with money. VERDICT Women desiring a book tailored to their unique financial needs will find this work approachable and informative.--Jennifer Clifton, Indiana State Lib., Indianapolis
